June 2009 Living in Africa
Having now delivered the boat from Sweden to Djibouti, I am now temporarily working from this former French African colony. For someone like me who has been bitten by the 'wanderlust' bug it is ideal. Everyone I meet out here has got a remarkable tale to tell of how they came to arrive in Djibouti. Whether it be a Swedish Sergeant in the French Foreign Legion who joined "to forget!" or an Iranian Art dealer who is trying to get his seized paintings out of a neighbouring country or just simply a Spanish diver who lost his bar in Ethiopia over a game of cards, they all have their own unique fascinating story. So what Djibouti has for me is an English language school, Diving opportunities, potential work on boats around the area and most importantly the chance to live and work abroad.
My French is improving little by little and is useful for the Africans who also use it as their second language and the French appreciate my sometimes comical efforts. Explaining that your phone is broken then realising you don't know the French word for 'broken' so by saying "tres-malade" (very sick) usually gets some form of laughable comprehension.
On the subject of phones, my Orange mobile phone does not work out here, so please keep in touch either on this website by posting a comment. I should then be able to trace your email address (if given) and send you a reply from my personal email address. Or alternatively go direct to my personal email if you already have it.
My personal email using 'veiled speech' is:
My nickname and surname (lowercase no spaces) @hotmail.com
